A CPD tracker for healthcare professionals across 9 UK regulators

This free CPD tracker for healthcare professionals lets you log each learning activity against your own regulator's cycle. Choose your regulator and the tool shows that regulator's current requirements as a tick list, with a link to the official page and the month we last checked it. Then add activities as you go: the date, what you did, hours or points, whether it was learning with others, the standard or domain it relates to, your evidence and a short reflection.

As you log, the tracker adds up your total and your participatory or interactive learning, and shows progress against a target you set. When you need it, print the log or save it as a PDF, or download it as a CSV file to open in a spreadsheet or upload to an appraisal system.

Your log is saved in your browser on this device only. We never see it. Clearing your browser data removes it, so download a copy every few weeks.

Revalidation and CPD rules at a glance

Each regulator sets its own rules, and they differ more than most people expect. Some count hours, the GOC counts points, and the HCPC and GMC set no fixed number at all. The table summarises what we checked on each regulator's own pages in October 2026. The tracker uses the same facts.

RegulatorCycleWhat you need to record
GMC (doctors)Revalidation usually every five yearsAnnual appraisal with six types of supporting information; colleague and patient feedback at least once per cycle. The GMC sets no fixed number of CPD hours.
NMC (nurses, midwives, nursing associates)Every three years35 hours of CPD, at least 20 participatory; 450 practice hours; 5 written reflective accounts; reflective discussion; 5 pieces of practice-related feedback.

Rules change, and some details depend on your profession or registration type. Always confirm the current requirements on your regulator's website before you rely on a number. The sources are listed at the end of this page.

A simple CPD cycle
  1. PlanIdentify what you need to learn for your practice.
  2. LearnCourses, reading, supervision and learning with others.
  3. ReflectWhat changed in your thinking and why it matters.
  4. ApplyUse the learning with patients or service users.
  5. RecordKeep evidence in the format your regulator asks for.

How to keep a CPD log that stands up to review

Most regulators care about more than the total. They want to see that learning was relevant to your practice, that you thought about it, and that it made a difference for patients or service users. A few habits make that easy to show:

  1. Log as you go. Add each activity within a week, while you still remember what you took from it.
  2. Link each entry to a standard. Note the part of the NMC Code, Good medical practice, the HCPC standards, a GDC development outcome or a GOC domain that it relates to.
  3. Write two or three lines of reflection. What did you learn, and what will you do differently? Keep it free of anything that could identify a patient or colleague.
  4. Record your evidence. Note where the certificate, notes or feedback are kept, so you can find them quickly if you are audited.
  5. Mark learning with others. The NMC, GOC, GOsC and GCC all set a minimum for participatory or interactive learning, so tick it when it applies.

If you are also dealing with a concern

A tidy, dated CPD record is useful evidence in a fitness to practise case too. It shows a panel what you learned, when, and how you applied it. The remediation readiness check includes CPD questions, and the remediation pathway pulls your log into an evidence portfolio.

Courses you can log, and how to describe them honestly

Each Healthcare Practise UK course states its estimated learning time, usually about two hours including reflection and the assessment. When you log one, record those hours as self-directed learning, add the certificate of completion as evidence, and write your reflection. Our courses are independent and are not approved by any regulator, so describe them as what they are.

  • Nurses and midwives often start with the NMC Code course, which covers professionalism, the Code, revalidation and conduct.
  • Doctors can use the Good medical practice course as supporting information for appraisal.
  • HCPC registrants have a professionalism course built around the standards of conduct, performance and ethics.

Optometrists and dispensing opticians should note that the GOC only accepts self-directed CPD if at least 18 points come from GOC CPD providers. Our courses are not GOC-approved CPD. Check what counts for your registration type before you plan your cycle.

Need a full set for one concern? See the course bundles. For a reflective account to go with your log, try the reflective statement builder. If you also need feedback from colleagues, the testimonial request generator helps you ask.

What this tracker does not do

It does not submit anything to your regulator, and it is not an official revalidation or renewal form. NMC registrants still complete revalidation through NMC Online, pharmacy professionals submit records through the GPhC, and so on. The tracker is a private working log that helps you get there with your evidence in order. It is not legal or professional advice. See all our free tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is my CPD log stored online?

No. It is saved only in the browser on the device you use. Download the CSV or print it regularly so you have a copy.

How many CPD hours do nurses need for NMC revalidation?

35 hours over three years, at least 20 of them participatory, according to the NMC's revalidation pages. The tracker shows this when you choose the NMC.

Does the GMC set a number of CPD hours?

Not on its supporting information guidance. Figures such as 50 credits a year come from royal colleges and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, not the GMC.

Can I track GOC points instead of hours?

Yes. Enter points in the hours field and set your target to 36, or 54 if you hold a relevant specialty.

Can I import the log into my appraisal or revalidation portfolio?

You can download a CSV file and open it in a spreadsheet. Whether you can import it depends on the system you use.

Do Healthcare Practise UK courses count towards my CPD?

Most regulators let you choose relevant learning yourself. Log the stated learning time as self-directed learning with your certificate and reflection. Check your own regulator's rules first; GOC registrants in particular should check the provider requirement.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us your regulator and the concern. The pathway shows the courses that fit, helps you write your reflection and puts your evidence in order. It is free and nothing leaves your browser.
