Healthcare management training courses for the people who run services

These healthcare management training courses are for the people who answer for a service as well as work in it: practice managers, registered managers and nominated individuals, ward and department leads, clinical leads, owners and partners, HR and data protection leads. When an inspector, an ombudsman or the ICO asks how something is done, it is usually one of them who has to explain.

The six courses here cover the systems that sit behind safe care: inspection readiness, complaints, recruitment checks, data protection, everyday information governance, and the culture that follows an incident. Each takes about 2 hours, is self-paced, ends with a 15-question scenario assessment and a written reflection, and gives a certificate of completion from Healthcare Practise UK. They are written for UK services and, where the rules differ, they explain England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland separately.

Healthcare Practise UK is an independent provider. We are not affiliated with CQC, the ICO, any professional regulator or the NHS. The courses support awareness and good practice; they do not replace legal advice, current regulator guidance or any training your employer or contract requires.

Who these courses are for

Management responsibility in health and care is spread more widely than job titles suggest. The courses suit:

  • Practice managers in general practice, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry and physiotherapy, who often hold complaints, recruitment, data protection and CQC responsibilities at once;
  • Registered managers and nominated individuals in care homes, domiciliary care and independent clinics, who carry personal legal accountability to CQC in England;
  • Clinical leads, ward and department managers who lead teams after incidents and sit on interview panels;
  • Data protection officers, IG leads and Caldicott Guardians;
  • HR, workforce and compliance staff responsible for personnel files and agency assurance;
  • Deputies and aspiring managers who need a structured grounding before taking on accountability.

Registered professionals in these roles keep their own regulator's duties. The GMC's guidance on leadership and management, the NMC Code and the standards of the HCPC, GDC, GPhC, GOC, GOsC, GCC and Social Work England all expect those who manage systems to make sure others can raise concerns, records are kept and people are treated fairly. Each course shows how its topic connects to those standards.

What each course covers

CQC Inspection Readiness: Fundamental Standards in Practice

The CQC inspection readiness course works from the fundamental standards in Regulations 9 to 20A, explains how CQC gathers evidence and enforces, and sets out the framework changes from the 2023 single assessment framework to the draft sector-specific frameworks of March 2026. Its main message is that readiness is everyday practice: rolling audits, specific actions, contemporaneous records, a notification log and staff who can speak honestly without being scripted. It is for services in England.

Complaints Handling for Practice and Service Managers

The complaints handling course covers the frameworks, timescales and ombudsmen in all four UK nations and the independent sector, then works through early resolution, proportionate investigation, fairness to staff, response letters, meaningful apologies, online reviews and complaints spanning several organisations. It ends with turning themes into improvement and the data protection complaints duty that applied from June 2026.

Safe Recruitment and Pre-Employment Checks in Healthcare

The safer recruitment course goes through every check: identity, right to work and eVisas, registration and performers lists, employment history and references, DBS, PVG and AccessNI, and work health assessments after a conditional offer. It covers agency, locum, volunteer and student workers, what must be done before day one, and auditing personnel files.

Data Protection and UK GDPR for Healthcare Practices

The UK GDPR course is for owners, managers and data protection leads. It covers lawful bases for health data, accountability documents, the DPO requirement for NHS contractors, subject access, sharing and safeguarding, suppliers and international transfers, DPIAs for AI tools, breach reporting within 72 hours, and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 changes.

Information Governance and Data Security for Health and Care Staff

The information governance course is the one for the whole team. It turns the Caldicott Principles into habits: verifying callers, handling relatives' questions, looking only at records you need, checking email recipients, spotting phishing, never sharing a smartcard, and reporting incidents fast.

Building a Just and Learning Culture After Incidents

The just culture course is for leaders in the hours and weeks after something goes wrong. It covers the first response and first conversation with staff, NHS England's A just culture guide for fair decisions about individuals, restorative questions, psychological safety, engaging patients and families, and fair, proportionate referrals to regulators.

Choosing the right course for each role

The courses overlap deliberately, because inspection evidence, complaints, recruitment and data all feed the same governance. A simple way to choose:

How teams use these courses

Most organisations use these courses in one of four ways. Some give a new manager a structured induction across all six topics in their first months in post. Some run a single topic across the whole team, for example information governance for everyone who handles records, followed by a team discussion of what to change locally. Some use a course to prepare for a self-assessment, a mock review or a DSPT submission. And some use one after a finding, such as a CQC requirement notice about recruitment files or an ombudsman criticism of a complaint response, as part of a root-cause action plan rather than a box-ticking exercise.

Every course ends with a written reflection, which is often the most useful part for a team. Asking each person to bring one action from their reflection to a team meeting turns individual learning into a shared improvement plan, and gives managers dated evidence of learning that leads to change, which is what inspectors and commissioners look for.

For several staff, team credits let one manager buy once, assign courses to named people and track progress and completion dates on a dashboard with a CSV export for your training matrix. The courses for organisations page explains how credits work and how to set up a team.

Packs and buying several courses

If you are buying several titles for yourself, for example the CQC, complaints and recruitment courses as a new registered manager, the basket on our course portal applies our multi-course savings automatically. Prices are read live from the portal, so the amount you see in the basket is the amount you pay. The bulk buy offer page explains how packs and multi-course savings work. For organisations with many learners, team credits are usually simpler than individual purchases.

CPD, revalidation and what the certificate shows

Each course is designed to take approximately 2 hours, including reading, reflection points, the reflective account and the assessment. Record the time you actually spend. For NMC revalidation, nurses, midwives and nursing associates record 35 hours of CPD over three years, at least 20 of them participatory; self-directed online learning usually counts as individual learning unless you complete it with others. The GMC does not set fixed hours; doctors reflect on CPD, including leadership and management roles, at appraisal. Other regulators set their own requirements, and managers without professional registration can use the certificate and reflection as evidence of professional development.

The certificate of completion shows that you passed the course assessment. As each course says, passing supports your learning record but does not by itself demonstrate competence in your role. The reflection, and the changes you make afterwards, carry more weight.

Frequently asked questions

Are these healthcare management courses only for managers?

Mostly, but not entirely. The information governance course is written for every member of staff, and many teams use the complaints course with reception and front-line staff. The CQC, recruitment, UK GDPR and just culture courses are aimed at people with management or governance responsibilities.

Do the courses cover Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

The complaints, recruitment, UK GDPR, information governance and just culture courses explain the differences between the four nations. The CQC course is specific to England, although it sets out the regulators and standards that apply elsewhere.

Are the courses up to date for 2026?

Yes. They reflect the CQC draft sector frameworks published in March 2026, the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 including the complaints duty from 19 June 2026, the Information Commission from 30 September 2026, and PVG five-year membership in Scotland from April 2026. Always check the current guidance, which takes precedence.

Will these courses meet our mandatory training requirements?

They support awareness and good practice, but we do not claim they meet any specific mandatory requirement. Check what your employer, NHS contract, commissioner or regulator requires. The CQC course, for example, states that it does not meet the learning disability and autism training requirement.

How long does each course take?

About 2 hours each, including a 15-question scenario assessment with a pass mark of 12 and a written reflective account. They are self-paced, so staff can complete them across several sessions.

Can I buy courses for my whole team?

Yes. Team credits let you assign any course to named staff and track progress and completion dates from a manager dashboard. See the courses for organisations page for how it works.

What does each learner receive?

A certificate of completion from Healthcare Practise UK for each course passed, plus their own written reflection to keep for appraisal, revalidation or a training record.
