CPD courses for revalidation and career development

These six CPD courses for revalidation and career development cover the professional skills that sit alongside clinical work and shape a whole career: keeping a portfolio that satisfies your regulator, working safely as a locum, practising ethically in aesthetics, supervising and assessing learners, leading a team and looking after your own wellbeing. They are written for UK healthcare professionals registered with the GMC, NMC, HCPC, GDC, GPhC, GOC, GOsC, GCC and Social Work England, and most are just as useful to the managers and educators who support them.

None of these topics is a fitness to practise concern in itself, but each is a place where careers can go wrong. Revalidation can be deferred because feedback was never collected. A locum can be caught out by a borrowed login or a result that landed after the placement ended. An aesthetic prescriber can fall foul of advertising law with one social media post. A supervisor can pass a learner who should not have passed. A leader can stop hearing concerns. And burnout affects judgement, compassion and safety long before anyone names it. The courses tackle each of these directly, with worked examples and scenario-based assessment.

Every course takes approximately 2 hours, is self-paced and is taken on our course portal. Each ends with a written reflective account and a 15-question assessment with a pass mark of 12, and gives you a certificate of completion from Healthcare Practise UK. Healthcare Practise UK is an independent provider: we are not affiliated with any UK regulator or the NHS, and no regulator has reviewed these courses. The full course catalogue lists every title.

Who these courses are for

The topic is broad on purpose, because career questions cut across professions. In practice, the courses tend to be used by five groups:

  • Registrants approaching revalidation or a CPD audit, who want to know exactly what their regulator asks for and how to evidence it without a last-minute rush.
  • Locum, bank and agency staff, from full-time locum GPs and pharmacists to nurses who pick up occasional agency shifts, who face the particular risks of moving between unfamiliar settings.
  • Prescribers and practitioners in aesthetics, or those considering it, who need to understand where professional standards and fast-changing law draw the lines.
  • Supervisors, assessors, mentors and new leaders, who have been handed responsibility for learners or a team, often without formal preparation.
  • Anyone feeling the strain of workload, nights, moral distress or isolation, and the colleagues and managers who want to support them.

Managers and practice owners use the same courses to give a whole team a shared baseline, which is covered further down this page.

What each course covers

Preparing Your Appraisal and Revalidation Portfolio

The revalidation portfolio course sets out what each of the nine regulators currently requires, from the GMC's six types of supporting information to the NMC's practice hours, CPD, feedback, five reflective accounts and reflective discussion, and the GPhC's annual records. It then teaches the skills: a learning needs analysis, a SMART development plan, recording CPD as you go, planning feedback and quality improvement, writing reflection that shows insight, and avoiding the pitfalls that cause deferral or lapsed registration.

Locum and Agency Working: Professional Risks and Good Practice

The locum and agency working course works through a temporary placement from start to finish: checks, indemnity and registration before you accept, deciding whether work is within your competence, a minimum induction checklist, never using another person's login, prescribing in an unfamiliar setting, making sure every result has an owner before you leave, raising concerns as an outsider, and honest timesheets and fitness to work.

Ethics and Professional Standards in Aesthetic and Cosmetic Practice

The aesthetics ethics course is for registered professionals who provide, prescribe for or supervise non-surgical cosmetic procedures. It covers in-person assessment before prescribing injectables, consent with time to reflect, body dysmorphic disorder and coercion, declining treatment, the ban on advertising prescription-only medicines to the public, complications and Yellow Card reporting, and the licensing changes under way in England and Scotland.

Supervision, Mentoring and Supporting Learners

The clinical supervision training separates supervisor, assessor, mentor, coach and preceptor roles and explains frameworks such as the NMC's Standards for student supervision and assessment and the GMC's Promoting excellence. It then covers psychological safety, the one-minute preceptor, graded responsibility, fair assessment, feedback models, restorative supervision and learners in difficulty, including the problem of failing to fail.

Clinical Leadership Essentials for Healthcare Professionals

The clinical leadership course starts from the idea that you do not need a title to lead. It covers leading yourself with self-awareness and integrity, compassionate leadership and psychological safety, safe delegation, just culture and the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework, reading data over time, PDSA cycles, responding to concerns and leading inclusively across boundaries.

Burnout, Resilience and Wellbeing for Healthcare Professionals

The burnout and resilience course explains burnout as the World Health Organization describes it, how it differs from stress, depression and moral injury, and why staff wellbeing and patient safety are linked. It treats resilience as a shared responsibility of individuals, teams and organisations, and covers rest on shift work, psychological skills, peer support, supporting a struggling colleague, your professional responsibilities for your own health and where to get help in each UK nation.

The courses overlap deliberately in places. Psychological safety appears in the supervision, leadership and burnout courses because it matters to learners, teams and individuals in different ways, and appraisal appears in several because it is where most of this learning ends up being discussed.

Recording these courses for CPD and revalidation

Record the time you actually spend, which may be more or less than the two-hour estimate. Nurses, midwives and nursing associates should note that a course completed alone normally counts as individual learning towards the NMC's 35 hours; it can count as participatory if you complete it with colleagues and discuss it together. Doctors reflect on CPD at appraisal rather than counting fixed hours. The HCPC, GDC, GPhC, GOC, GOsC, GCC and Social Work England each set their own requirements, so check yours and any employer requirements.

The reflective account at the end of each course is often the most useful thing to keep. Written in your own words and stored with the certificate, it shows what you learned and what you will change, which is what appraisers, confirmers and auditors look for. The free CPD and revalidation tracker helps you keep count of hours, records and reflections in one place, stored only in your browser.

How teams and organisations use these courses

Several of these courses are bought most often by organisations rather than individuals. Staffing agencies use the locum course to give everyone on their books the same baseline. Aesthetic clinics use the aesthetics ethics course so that every prescriber and practitioner works to the same standards on consent, advertising and complications. Hospitals, practices and care providers use the supervision and leadership courses for new supervisors and first-line leaders, and the burnout course as part of a wider wellbeing offer.

Through our team credits scheme, an organisation buys course credits, a manager adds staff to a dashboard in the student portal and assigns courses, and the dashboard shows progress, completion dates and certificates issued, with a CSV export for your training records. One credit covers one course for one staff member, so you can assign a different mix of these courses to different roles.

Completion records support your own training evidence, but the courses do not replace any statutory or mandatory training your organisation requires, and they do not decide any regulatory or employment outcome.

Buying several courses together

Many people take two or three of these courses together, for example the locum and revalidation portfolio courses, or supervision and leadership. If you add several courses to your basket, our multi-buy savings for mixed baskets apply automatically on the course portal; the current terms and the concern-based packs are explained on the bulk buy offer page. Prices are read live from the portal, so the figure you see in your basket is the one you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Which course should I take first?

Start with whatever is closest in your diary. If revalidation or renewal is within a year, take the revalidation portfolio course. If you are starting locum work, a new supervisory role or a leadership post, take that course first. The table on this page matches each course to a career stage.

How long does each course take?

Each is designed to take approximately 2 hours, including the reading, reflection points, a written reflective account and a 15-question assessment. They are self-paced, so you can stop and return as often as you need.

Are these courses recognised by my regulator?

No UK regulator reviews or recognises courses of this kind. Healthcare Practise UK is an independent provider, not affiliated with any regulator or the NHS. You can record the time you spend as CPD and use your reflective account as supporting evidence.

Do they count as participatory CPD for the NMC?

Usually not on their own, because self-directed online learning completed alone normally counts as individual learning. If you work through a course with colleagues and discuss it, it can count as participatory. Record what you actually did.

Are these courses only for doctors and nurses?

No. They are written for registrants of the GMC, NMC, HCPC, GDC, GPhC, GOC, GOsC, GCC and Social Work England. The aesthetics ethics course is aimed at doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and other prescribers, as they are the professionals who can prescribe cosmetic medicines.

Can my organisation buy these courses for staff?

Yes. Through our team credits scheme a manager buys credits, adds staff and assigns courses from a dashboard that shows progress and completion dates. One credit covers one course for one person.

Is the burnout course a substitute for professional help?

No. It explains burnout, practical strategies and where to find confidential support in each UK nation, including urgent help. If you are struggling, speak to your GP, occupational health or a practitioner health service.

What do I receive when I finish a course?

A certificate of completion from Healthcare Practise UK for each course you pass, and your own written reflective account to keep with it.
