A reflective practice course for people who find writing it hard
Many professionals reflect all the time in their heads but struggle to write it down, or worry that what they write could be used against them. This reflective practice course deals with both problems. It compares what each regulator asks for, explains what is and is not legally protected, shows one event reflected on through three different models, and gives practical guidance on writing reflection that is honest, useful and safe.
It takes about 1.5 hours, including a 15-question scenario test and your own reflective account, and ends with a certificate of completion from Healthcare Practise UK.

What the course covers
| Module | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 1. Introduction to Reflective Practice | What reflection is, why it matters, its link to lifelong learning and wellbeing, and the barriers to it. |

| 4. From Reflection to Insight | How reflection becomes insight, reflection without insight, bias and blind spots, and how to show insight. |
| 5. Writing and Recording Reflection | Writing reflective notes, anonymisation, reflection in fitness to practise, why reflection is not a substitute for reporting, AI tools, and weak versus strong samples. |
| 6. Embedding Reflection in Practice | Making reflection a habit, feedback and learning needs, remediation, team reflection and reflection across career stages. |
| 7. Conclusion and Key Takeaways | A summary of the key points. |
| 8. Reflection | Your written reflective account using a model from the course. |
Weak and strong examples
Module 5 sets weak and strong sample reflections side by side, so you can see the difference between describing an event and showing what you learned and changed. It also covers AI: identifiable patient information must never go into public AI tools, and a reflection has to be your own thinking in your own words.
How it maps to regulator requirements
Reflection appears in every regulator’s CPD or revalidation scheme, but in different forms. The course compares them; here are a few you will meet:
| Regulator | What it asks for |
|---|---|
| NMC | 5 written reflective accounts per three-year revalidation, each linked to the Code, plus a reflective discussion with another NMC registrant |
| GMC | Reflection on supporting information at annual appraisal, as part of revalidation |
| GPhC | One reflective account record each year, alongside four CPD records and one peer discussion |
| GOC | A reflective exercise with a peer by the end of the 2025 to 2027 cycle |
| HCPC | A CPD record and, if selected for audit, a written profile with evidence |
| GDC | A personal development plan and reflection on how verifiable CPD has been applied |
The course is built on The Reflective Practitioner guidance (2018) and the regulators’ 2019 joint statement on the benefits of reflective practice. Our self-paced courses count as self-directed learning; check how your regulator treats them. See NMC and GMC requirements in detail.
Reflection in remediation
If you are responding to a concern, reflection is usually the piece decision makers read most closely. The course shows how to do it well:
- Write about what you learned and changed, not only what happened.
- Keep it professional and anonymised. Reflective notes have no legal privilege, so do not speculate about blame or name colleagues.
- Keep factual incident statements separate from personal reflection, and take advice from your defence organisation, union or professional body before giving reflections in proceedings.
- Show that reflection led to action, with dates and evidence.
When you are ready, the free reflective statement builder gives regulator-specific headings and an anonymity check. The remediation pathway shows where reflection fits with learning and evidence.
Healthcare Practise UK is an independent CPD provider. We are not affiliated with any regulator or with the NHS, and no regulator has reviewed this course. A course can support your reflection and remediation, but your regulator, case examiners or a panel make the decisions, and nothing you buy here predicts an outcome. If you are under investigation, take advice from your defence organisation, union or a solicitor as well.

Frequently asked questions
Will this help with NMC revalidation reflective accounts?
Yes. It explains what the NMC asks for and how to write accounts that show learning linked to the Code. You still write the accounts yourself, on the NMC form.
Which reflective models does it teach?
Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle in depth, plus Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper (What? So what? Now what?), Kolb, Johns, Brookfield’s four lenses and Schön’s reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action.
Can my reflections be used against me?
The regulators have said they will not ask for personal reflective notes to investigate concerns, but the notes have no legal privilege, and courts and coroners can order disclosure. The course shows how to write reflections that are useful and safe.
Can I use AI to write my reflection?
The course advises against it. Never put identifiable patient information into public AI tools, and make sure the reflection is your own thinking. Some regulators, such as the GCC, warn against generic AI-written reflections.
How long is it, and is there a test?
About 1.5 hours of learning, with a 15-question scenario-based assessment. The pass mark is 12 out of 15.
Is the course reviewed or approved by a regulator?
No. Healthcare Practise UK is independent. The course is based on published regulator guidance, which you should always check for the current version.
