A clinical leadership course for every healthcare professional
This clinical leadership course introduces the essentials of leading in UK healthcare, whether or not you hold a formal leadership role. It is written for doctors, nurses, midwives, nursing associates, allied health, pharmacy and dental professionals who are stepping into leadership, already lead a team or service, or simply want more influence over the quality of care around them.
Every registered professional leads at some point: coordinating a shift, guiding a student, chairing a multidisciplinary meeting, speaking up for a patient or improving a process. The regulators say so. Good medical practice (2024) and the GMC's leadership and management guidance apply to all doctors, the NMC Code expects registrants to provide leadership to protect people's wellbeing, and the HCPC, GDC and GPhC standards contain similar expectations on teamwork, delegation and quality. The course also draws the lesson of successive UK inquiries, from Mid Staffordshire to the 2022 East Kent maternity investigation: when leaders stop listening, patients are harmed.
It takes approximately 2 hours, including reading, reflection points, a written reflective account and a 15-question assessment, and you take it at your own pace on our course portal. See the course catalogue for related titles. Healthcare Practise UK is an independent provider. We are not affiliated with any UK regulator or the NHS, and no regulator has reviewed this course.
Frameworks and standards the course maps to
| Source | How the course uses it |
|---|---|
| Regulators' standards | GMC Good medical practice and leadership and management guidance; NMC Code and standards of proficiency; HCPC, GDC and GPhC standards on teamwork, delegation and quality |
| Healthcare Leadership Model | The NHS Leadership Academy's nine dimensions, used for a self-rating exercise |
| NHS England | Management and Leadership Framework (2025), Fit and Proper Person Test Framework (2023), Patient Safety Incident Response Framework, A just culture guide, WRES and WDES, Core20PLUS5 |
| Manager regulation | The government's decision, after its 2025 consultation, to introduce a statutory barring scheme for NHS board members and their direct reports, to be operated by the HCPC, with further consultation and legislation to follow |
| Four nations | NHS Education for Scotland, Health Education and Improvement Wales, the Health and Social Care (Quality and Engagement) (Wales) Act 2020, and Northern Ireland's HSC Leadership Centre |
| Law | Equality Act 2010, Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998, and the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 |
The course is clear that professional accountability does not end when you take on management duties: regulators have acted against registrants for failing to act on concerns, misleading regulators or commissioners, and bullying.
What is inside, module by module
- Module 1, what clinical leadership is: leadership as everyone's business, leadership versus management, formal, informal and collective leadership, lessons from inquiries and reviews, and the national frameworks.
- Module 2, leading yourself: self-awareness and values, emotional intelligence, wellbeing as a leadership responsibility, decisions under pressure and integrity, and influencing people outside your line of authority.
- Module 3, leading teams: the four behaviours of compassionate leadership (attending, understanding, empathising, helping), psychological safety and civility, huddles, briefings and debriefs, safe delegation and accountability, and conflict and performance concerns.
- Module 4, leading for quality and safety: the dimensions of quality, systems thinking and just culture under PSIRF and its equivalents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, using data over time with run charts and statistical process control, and involving patients and carers.
- Module 5, leading change: the Model for Improvement and PDSA cycles (with a discharge letter example), the human side of change and resistance, sustaining and spreading improvement, and digital change and new roles.
- Module 6, the wider system: inclusive leadership, responding when concerns are raised, working across organisational boundaries, developing as a leader, and leading under pressure and in crisis.
Worked examples include a charge nurse who snaps at a junior colleague and then repairs the relationship, a consultant who tells nurses "I'll decide when to worry", a manager who rewrites policy after one bad month of falls data, and a hospital discharge team and community service who stop blaming each other once they map the process from the patient's side.
How you respond to the first concern
One line from the course's quick-reference guide sums up its approach: how you respond to the first concern decides whether you hear the second. A good response thanks the person, listens, acts proportionately, keeps them informed, protects them from detriment and feeds back what changed. The course sets this out as a do and do-not table, and covers when leaders must escalate rather than reassure upwards. Victimising a whistleblower is unlawful and a serious professional matter.
The same thinking runs through its treatment of incidents. A leader's first questions should be "Is everyone safe and supported?" and "What happened and why?", not "Whose fault is it?" Our just culture training and raising concerns training go deeper into each, and our conflict resolution training covers difficult conversations in teams.
Reflection, assessment and your certificate
"Apply it" tasks include rating yourself against the nine dimensions of the Healthcare Leadership Model, introducing or improving a team huddle and asking after two weeks whether it helped, and checking who in your team gets development opportunities. Your final reflective account covers what you learned about clinical leadership, which behaviour you will apply in your team and how, and how you will seek feedback on your leadership.
The 15-question assessment covers delegation accountability, run charts, PDSA, responding to concerns, inclusive leadership, digital change and the planned regulation of NHS managers. The pass mark is 12 (80%), and you receive a certificate of completion from Healthcare Practise UK. Passing supports your learning record; it does not by itself demonstrate competence.
For CPD, record the time you actually spend, which may be more or less than the two-hour estimate. Nurses, midwives and nursing associates should note that self-directed online learning done alone normally counts towards the NMC's individual CPD hours rather than its 20 participatory hours; if you work through it with colleagues and discuss it, it can become participatory. Doctors reflect on CPD at appraisal, and the GMC does not set fixed hours. Other regulators set their own rules, so check yours and any employer requirements. Keep the certificate and your reflection together.
Using it for development, appraisal and teams
Leadership activity, including improvement projects, team development and handling concerns, is valuable material for appraisal, revalidation and CPD; our revalidation portfolio course shows how to record it. For organisations, the course gives new ward managers, practice leads and clinical supervisors a shared foundation, and can be assigned through our team credits scheme. It is an introduction, not a leadership qualification or a substitute for the national development curricula.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a management role to take this course?
No. The course starts from the principle that every professional leads, whether coordinating a shift, supporting a student or improving a process. It suits people new to leadership as well as those in team or service roles.
Which frameworks does it use?
The NHS Leadership Academy's Healthcare Leadership Model, NHS England's Management and Leadership Framework, the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework and just culture guide, compassionate leadership as described by Professor Michael West and colleagues, and the Model for Improvement. It also covers approaches in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Does it cover the new regulation of NHS managers?
Yes, in outline. It explains the government's decision to introduce a statutory barring scheme for NHS board members and their direct reports, to be operated by the HCPC, with further consultation and legislation to follow, and the Fit and Proper Person Test Framework. Check the current position, as details are still being developed.
Is this a leadership qualification?
No. It is a 2-hour introduction to clinical leadership with a certificate of completion. It does not replace formal programmes run by national leadership bodies, universities or royal colleges.
Can I use it for appraisal or revalidation?
Yes. Record the time you actually spend as CPD and bring your reflective account to appraisal or your reflective discussion. NMC registrants should note that self-directed online learning done alone normally counts as individual rather than participatory CPD.
Is the course recognised by regulators?
No regulator reviews or recognises courses of this kind. Healthcare Practise UK is an independent provider. We are not affiliated with any UK regulator or the NHS, and no regulator has reviewed this course.
