Online CPD courses for healthcare professionals, filtered your way

This catalogue lists all 92 of our online CPD courses for healthcare professionals in the UK. Use the filters to narrow the list by regulator (GMC, NMC, HCPC, GDC, GPhC, GOC, GOsC, GCC or Social Work England) or by the concern you want to address, such as probity, professional boundaries, record keeping or communication. Each card shows the hours of learning and links to a full page explaining who the course is for, what it covers and which standards it maps to.

If you would rather be guided, the which course do I need finder asks up to four short questions and suggests a starting set. If you are responding to a concern, the remediation pathway puts the courses in context alongside reflection and evidence.

How the catalogue is organised

The courses fall into four groups. Knowing which group you need saves time.

Profession-specific ethics and professionalism

Written for one regulator's standards: for example Ethics and Ethical Standards for Doctors, Professionalism and Professional Standards for Nurses and Midwives, or Ethics and Ethical Standards for Social Workers. These suit revalidation and appraisal, and they are the profession-specific course that the pathway adds to a probity or conduct bundle.

Cross-professional topic courses

One subject, written for every regulated profession: probity, financial integrity, professional boundaries, chaperones and consent, confidentiality, documentation, duty of candour, communication, dignity and non-discrimination, teamwork, safe prescribing, social media, and clinical competence and patient safety. Each names the standards of every regulator it relates to.

Complaints and investigations

Two practical courses: how to avoid a complaint or investigation, and how to deal with one when it happens. A third, Rebuilding Trust of Patients, Public and Healthcare Regulators, looks at accountability and recovery after a concern.

Insight, reflection and remediation

The three core modules that most remediation plans draw on: the insight course, the reflective practice course and the remediation course. Alongside them sit a course on making sure a similar mistake or misconduct is not repeated, and the longer Fitness to Practise course, which explains how all nine regulators assess impairment.

What every course includes

The courses share one format, so you know what to expect before you buy.

  • Self-paced reading with cases. Each course is divided into sections with worked examples or case illustrations relevant to UK practice.
  • Reflection points. Short prompts in the body of the course ask you to stop and relate the material to your own work.
  • A scored assessment. Most courses end with 15 scenario-based multiple-choice questions with a pass mark of 12 (80%). The Fitness to Practise course has 40 questions and the same 80% pass mark.
  • A written reflective account. The last section asks you to write up what you learned and what you will change.
  • A certificate of completion. Issued in the name of Healthcare Practise UK once you pass.

How each course maps to regulator standards

Every course page has a "maps to" list naming the standards and guidance the course draws on. The cross-professional Probity course, for example, refers to the honesty and integrity standards of eight regulators and to the legal test for dishonesty. The Confidentiality course covers the common law duty of confidence, UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and the Caldicott principles. The Social Media course draws on guidance from the GMC, NMC, HCPC, GDC, GPhC, GOC and Social Work England.

The mapping is there so you can explain, to an appraiser or a decision maker, why you chose a course and which part of your standards it addresses. It is our own analysis of public guidance; it does not mean any regulator has reviewed the course.

Choosing courses for CPD and revalidation

If you are planning CPD rather than responding to a concern, start with your regulator's rules, then pick topics that fit your practice and your personal development plan.

  • Doctors discuss CPD at annual appraisal as one of six types of supporting information. The GMC itself does not set a number of hours.
  • Nurses, midwives and nursing associates need 35 hours over three years, of which 20 must be participatory. Self-paced reading counts towards the other 15 unless you complete it with colleagues.
  • Dental professionals record verifiable CPD against development outcomes A to D in a personal development plan. Check the GDC's criteria for verifiable CPD before you count any activity.
  • Optometrists and opticians should note that our courses are self-directed learning and are not GOC-approved CPD.

The regulator-by-regulator detail, with links to each regulator's own guidance, is on our regulators hub. Whatever scheme you are under, the written reflection at the end of each course gives you a head start on the reflective records most regulators ask for.

Choosing courses when you face a concern

Picking courses for remediation is less about volume and more about fit. Decision makers at the NMC, for instance, look at how relevant any training is to the concern and how you have applied it. A short, targeted set with a clear reason for each course usually tells a better story than a long list of certificates.

The course bundles do that matching for you. There is one bundle for each of eight concern types, and each explains why every course in it is there. Most combine two or three topic courses with the insight, reflection and remediation modules. You can add a whole bundle to your basket in one step and still drop any course you have already completed elsewhere.

Remember that courses are one part of remediation, not the whole of it. Regulators also weigh reflection, supervised practice, audit, feedback and testimonials, and they decide each case on its own facts. Please take advice from your defence organisation, union or a solicitor before you submit evidence.

Buying and taking a course

Select a course and you are taken to our course portal, where you pay in pounds sterling and then take the course. Everything is self-paced, so you can fit the reading around shifts and family life. Once you pass the assessment, your certificate of completion is issued in the name of Healthcare Practise UK. The how it works page covers accounts, certificates and support in more detail, and the frequently asked questions page answers the common practical points.

Frequently asked questions

How do I filter the courses?

Use the regulator and concern filters above the list. You can combine them, for example GDC and record keeping, to see only the courses that fit both.

Do I need to take the courses in a set order?

No. Each course stands alone. If you are building a remediation plan, many people take the topic course first and finish with the reflective practice course, so their written reflection draws on everything they have learned.

What is the pass mark?

Most courses have 15 scenario-based questions and a pass mark of 12 out of 15 (80%). The Fitness to Practise course has 40 questions and also needs 80%.

Is there a course for my profession specifically?

There are profession-specific ethics and professionalism courses for doctors, nurses and midwives, HCPC professions, dental professionals, pharmacy professionals, optometrists and opticians, osteopaths, chiropractors (ethics) and social workers. Filter by your regulator to see them.

Can I buy courses as a set?

Yes. The bundles page groups courses by concern and lets you add a full set to your basket at once.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us your regulator and the concern. The pathway shows the courses that fit, helps you write your reflection and puts your evidence in order. It is free and nothing leaves your browser.
